Weather experts are projecting 2-4 inches of rainfall over the weekend of Jan. 7-9, 2017. This could be the heaviest series of rainstorms in the last 10 years leading to localized flooding and heavy river flows. The most important thing is to prepare your home and family to be safe during the event. Secondarily is how will your backyard and swimming pool survive the event? The best way to help your pool is to prevent excess water from getting into the pool. Some tips are listed below.

Extreme rainfall can sometimes cause problems with swimming pools. They may get hazy or even slightly green afterwards! This is caused by all of the impurities washing into the pool with the rain! In extreme cases, yards with poor drainage or design can even get excess runoff of rainwater into the pool. Sometimes planter areas overflow into the pool and take dirt with it! Some pools may even turn a muddy brown! We cannot prevent this!

If your pool turns hazy or slightly green, please run your filter continuously and it should clear within a couple of days. Please make sure that all of your baskets are kept clean so that the filter will operate efficiently. The best thing to do is to not allow excess water to flow into the pool. If drainage is a problem, try sandbagging to redirect the water and prevent it from flowing into the pool. It may be beneficial to review your landscaping and see if there are things that can be done to minimize the potential for water to flow into the pool.

If we need to make extra trips to clear up these situations, we will have to charge additional trip charges. Once again, prevention is the best policy!

Extremely cold freezing temperatures are forecast for the first week of 2017. When we encounter temperatures approaching 32 degrees and below, action must be taken to protect your swimming pool equipment and piping. We all know that standing water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit. When water freezes, it expands, or grows in space. This expansion can cause damage by breaking plastic pipe or plastic pumps and filters. It can even warp or crack bronze or brass components! Water that is in motion however, is much harder to freeze.

The best way to protect your equipment and piping is to run your equipment during the time we encounter these freezing temperatures. As an example, most of the manufacturers of computerized control systems for swimming pool equipment include freeze protection in their logic. They have an air temperature sensor and when the air temperature reaches their preset temperature, the system is automatically turned on and it runs until the temperature reaches a safe level. If your system has a computerized control system, check your owners manual to learn about this feature.

If your pool is operated by mechanical timeclocks or manual on/off switches, you must take action to protect your equipment and piping, or face potential damages and repair costs. We suggest you set your timeclocks to run, or manually turn on the system during the times that we are expected to encounter freezing temperatures. This usually means running your system from late at night until mid morning. In more extreme temperatures you may need to run your system continuously until the temperature rises above freezing.

There is a module available to add a freeze protection sensor to mechanical timeclocks. It can be installed in most cases for under $250. A relatively small price to pay to protect your equipment and piping. The freeze that hit in late Dec. 1990 and Jan. 1991 caused severe damage to those who were not quick to act to protect their investment!

Don’t hesitate! Be prepared for this. It is coming!! We do not recommend just turning your system off. There may be water in the system that could freeze and cause damage! If you choose to turn your system off, make sure that you drain all of the water out of your system! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call our office!

Today I was privileged to meet with the Regional Water Authority (RWA) here in Sacramento, CA. The RWA is a joint powers authority representing two dozen water providers and affiliates in the greater Sacramento region. I presented to their committee of water conservation specialists on ways for current swimming pool owners to be water wise users of our limited natural resource, water.

There are a couple of ways that pool owners can save substantial amounts of water by utilizing water wise methods. Did you know that if you utilize a cover on your pool and keep it covered when it is not in use, you can reduce evaporative loss by approximately 93%! That is a huge amount! In the Sacramento valley it is not uncommon to lose 1.5-2 inches of pool water per week to evaporation during the warm season. Think how much water that is and if you could preserve 93% of it!! Floating solar covers are relatively inexpensive, will save water and can extend the swimming season up to a month on each end by warming the water. Where is the down side to this?

Periodically Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Calcium Hardness, salt content or Cyanuric Acid (CYA) content build up beyond the levels acceptable in balanced swimming pools. Historically the solution to this has been to simply drain the pool. Wait a minute! Are we simply going to drain 18,000 gallons of water down the drain? (18,000 gallons is the ave. capacity of a residential swimming pool in CA) Have we not learned that we can’t afford to do that anymore?? Water is a natural resource that is in limited supply! We have to be water wise and use our water efficiently. Simply draining a pool when there is an alternative is simply not acceptable! And today, there is an acceptable alternative to resolve these issues….Reverse Osmosis Filtration.

Yes, there are mobile Reverse Osmosis Filtration units that companies are using to provide a service for swimming pools to resolve these issues. These units can reduce the TDS, calcium, CYA and salt content in a swimming pool down to the minimum acceptable levels and even lower! In many cases the swimming pool water can be made better than the water coming out of the tap! There is no reason to drain a pool for these reasons any longer when there is such a viable alternative available.

Reverse Osmosis is a particularly good option for commercial swimming pools. Commercial pools reach the unacceptable levels much more rapidly than residential pools and may actually need this service on an annual basis! Commercial pools can be as small ar a residential pool in a small apt. complex, up to 500,000 gallons or more in a competitive swimming pool! How fast do the water savings add up when we are talking about those numbers!!

The swimming pool industry and swimming pool owners alike must realize that we have to do our part and be water wise users of this limited natural resource that we all rely upon on! As a society, we must commit to this. Talk about this. Tell our neighbors about this. Before it is too late and the bureaucrats decide to impart harsh restrictions on our ability to use water for our swimming pools.

Swim Chem’s Comprehensive Conservation Awareness

At Swim Chem we are committed to helping our customers conserve as much water and energy as possible.   In today’s world everyone is more aware that resources are limited.   It is important to be more water and energy efficient in operating our homes and businesses.

Our president, Jerry Wallace, also serves as the chairman of the board for the California Pool and Spa Association.  He is committed to setting the highest industry standards in environmental citizenship as well as business practices.

We are proud to offer the following environmentally-friendly services and products:

Save Water!

  • To prevent damage to your plaster and tile, your pool water should be purified or have it drained approximately every five years. PuriPool reverse osmosis purification service recycles an average of 85% of the water in your pool as opposed to a 100% drain and refill.    This conserves approximately 15,300 gallons in an average size residential pool.

In fact our PuriPool reverse osmosis system recycled 314,225 gallons of swimming pool water in its first 3.5 months of operation this year.

  • Pool covers are 93% effective in reducing evaporation.

Save Energy!

  • If you still have a conventional pump, consider replacing it with a new energy-efficient variable speed pump. During the summer your pool pump runs many hours.   Upgrading provides a 75% savings in energy use and gives you a full payback in 12-18 months, depending on your provider.   Many utility providers offer rebates for this upgrade.
  • Convert from halogen or incandescent bulbs to LED pool lights and save!!

Trust the PROS!!

At Swim Chem we believe being a successful business means more than  keeping the doors open….it means being good for your community! We provide our community with quality swimming pool products and services at fair prices…..and we’ve been doing it for over 46 years now! But that’s not enough! We provide good jobs with fair pay, good insurance and benefits for our team members and their families. But that’s not enough.

45th anniversary

We try very hard to be good stewards of our natural resources and recycle. We provide our customers with the option of receiving their bills electronically instead of paper statements in the mail. We offer electronic bill pay options to our customers as well. This saves trees and minimizes the impact on our landfills. We recycle at our facilities. We recycle paper, cardboard, bottles, glass, and metals. But that’s not enough.

Our newest venture into recycling is recycling swimming pool water. Yes, I said recycling swimming pool water. Over the course of time minerals and undesirable items build up in swimming pool water. When the water becomes saturated with too much of these, they need to be dealt with. Historically, the remedy has been to drain the 15,000-25,000 gallons of swimming pool water down the drain and refill it with fresh water. Not exactly being a good steward of our limited natural resource…water! We are now able to recycle this over saturated water through Reverse Osmosis (RO) Filtration and return most of it back to the pool…..purified!! We call it the PuriPool Process. But that’s not enough.

We feel that we need to give back to our community. Swim Chem is proud to be an Allegiant Giving Partner company. Allegiant Giving is a group of businesses that have come together as a charitable organization to support “Today’s Hero’s and Tomorrow’s Leaders”. Those being our military veterans, especially the injured, and our youth through educational and athletic programs. The Allegiant Giving Partners have realized that we can do so much more as an organized group than we can as individual companies. It is an honor to work with these like minded companies.

This is why we consider Swim Chem a successful business and being good for your community!

conservation-v1Introducing the Puripool Process!!
Swim Chem is happy to introduce the Puripool Process to the greater Sacramento swimming pool market! Periodically swimming pools need to be drained due to high calcium hardness (CH), high total dissolved solids (TDS), excessive cyanuric acid (CYA) levels, high salt content and many other reasons. Some of these are caused or contributed to by the normal course of evaporation and refill and/or through the addition of chemicals. Historically the remedy has been to drain the pool and refill it with fresh water. After 4 years of drought, pumping 15-20,000 gallons of water down the drain is frowned upon. Now there is a better way! The can process out these undesirables and return approximately 85% of the water back to the pool with approximately 15% returned to the water treatment system for re-use. This is a multi stage process which culminates with Reverse Osmosis (RO) filtration to remove these undesirables. There are only so many compensating adjustments that can be made to keep the water balanced. Eventually more drastic corrective action is necessary! Don’t drain..Puripool!!
After 4 years of drought and increasing regulation on water uses, it is time that we realize that water is a very precious natural resource and we as a society must be better stewards! We will not rain and snow our way out of this drought with one above normal year. We can’t count on El Nino every year! Conserve now!!
